Komodo/Bali, Indonesia: June 9-25, 2015

(1 customer review)

Komodo National Park was officially declared a World Heritage Site in 1991 and is one of the largest protected zones on the planet. It consists of 3 major islands; Komodo, Rinca and Padar as well as a number of smaller ones. Only on these legendary islands do Komodo dragons, survivors of the prehistoric carnivores that thrived in tropical Asia 100 million years ago, still live and roam freely. The waters offer an incredible variety of coral habitats and marine life including critters, sharks, manta rays, dolphin, napoleon wrasse, whales and turtles. The best way to experience diving in this area is on a liveaboard; the gateway to get on board is through Bali any time from mid-April until the end of October. A 5mm full wetsuit is recommended for some of the colder dive sites on these itineraries. Whilst each itinerary may be different, all boats will visit the top dive sites in the park as well as Moyo Island (massive elephant and barrel sponges) and Sangeang (famous for its critters).

A traditionally crafted two-masted wooden Phinisi, accommodating 16 guests in comfort, including being pampered by a crew of 17! 11 days, 10 nights, 9 days of diving (3 – 4 dives daily).

I ended up going on this dream trip by myself, but ended up with many new friends, from the guests and the crew. Komodo is as good as diving gets anywhere in the world, and Bali is world-class shore diving too. I will be back, and many of us will meet up again, in the Philippines in 2016, and Raja Ampat in 2017. Come join us.
