Description
We loved it there, so stay tuned, we’re going back in 2022!!
Why Dominica?
Dominica is an island for active visitors looking for an adventure experience on an unspoiled Caribbean island. If you like scuba diving, you’ll find exciting dive sites, including steep drop-offs, walls and pinnacles all pretty close to the shore.
What else can you do in Dominica?
There have been 22 species of whales spotted in Dominican waters, so we’ll go on a whale watching excursion – Dominica is known as the Caribbean’s whale watching ‘capital’. If you’ve got the energy, hike to the Boiling Lake in the centre of Morne Trois Pitons National Park – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit two spectacular waterfalls at Trafalgar Falls, The Emerald Pool – a beauty spot in the rainforest, enjoy a guided tour around Papillote Gardens – they’re gorgeous, and take a ride on the rainforest aerial tram – it’s a 90-minute exploration (in a gondola) of the Dominica rainforest canopy. Popular TiTou Gorge, used as one of the sets for ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ gets busy when cruise ships are in port but if you visit early morning or late afternoon you’ll miss the hoards.
Dominica is the Whale Watching Capital of the Caribbean, and we’re making plans to see Sperm Whales!
Dive Dominica offers whale-watching trips every Sunday. If you have a group of 10 or more, we can also arrange for trips on Wednesday afternoons. The boats depart at 2:00 pm. Complimentary fruit juices and rum punch will be served on the return journey. The tour duration is 3 to 3 1/2 hours long.
Dominica’s sheer underwater drop-offs create deep sheltered bays along its western coastline. These deep coastal waters are the feeding grounds for at 6 different species of cetaceans seen on a regular basis and an additional 16 on an occasional basis. All in all, 22 of the 33 species known in the Caribbean have been seen in Dominican waters.
The most commonly sighted cetaceans include short-fin pilot whales, false killer whales, melon head whales, pygmy sperm whales, and humpback whales.
But our most impressive ocean giant is the Sperm Whale. Dominica is the only country in the world the Sperm Whales can be sighted year round, although sightings are most common between November and March. Juvenile and female sperm whales do not migrate, staying here 12 months a year. Mature male sperm whales however do migrate to and from Polar Regions to Dominica – and they come here specially to mate.
Sperm whales are the largest predator on earth, reaching up to 70 feet/21 meters long, and weighing 60 tons. They are bright as well, and have the largest brain in the animal kingdom. Perhaps most notable – and incredible to witness – is their ability to take a deep dive. When breaching, they can dive more than 6,000 feet/2,000 m deep to hunt in the dark with echolocation for their favorite and abundant food source – large and giant squid. What is equally amazing is that they can stay down there for close to an hour!
There’s great dining and nightlife in Dominica!
There’s a rainforest restaurant on Trafalgar Falls Road (booking essential) which serves tasty creole dishes and seafood specialties too, and in Roseau a vegetarian restaurant run by Rastafarians. There’s a beach eating place at Calibishie which offers views of Guadeloupe, one in Lagon where you can enjoy sunset views over Prince Rupert Bay, and lots of little snack bars dotted around the island. Logically you’ll find that places to eat along the beaches usually specialise in seafood dishes. Dominica’s nightlife as such is generally found in hotels and bars, but there is a beach bar in Portsmouth with live bands on occasions as well as a weekly DJ reggae night, and also live jazz once a week in Roseau (subject to dry weather!).
We’re staying at the Fort Young Hotel!
Built to protect the island, Fort Young Hotel has always commanded a position like no other. Located in Roseau, Dominica’s capital and only “downtown,” it sits in the main marina with the ferry port and market just a minute’s walk from its entrance. Fort Young Hotel has ideal exposure to Dominica’s vibrant culture, delicious cuisine, and activity in the marina, yet affords its guests a luxurious sense of seclusion. From your room’s balcony, the sights and sounds of the capital vanish, replaced by the gentle lapping of waves and endless expanse of the sea and sky.
