Dominica

On track to become the first climate-resilient nation in the world and most recently named a top destination to visit in 2020 by Condé Nast Traveler, Dominica remains unspoilt by the impacts of mass tourism and offers an ethical, environmentally supportive option for travelers.  Embraced by lush foliage and secluded beaches throughout, the island fosters one’s most dream-like fascinations.  With world-class diving, whale watching and boundless wildlife amongst the Caribbean’s longest hiking trail and only natural World Heritage site, Dominica realizes adventurous living amidst untrammeled natural splendour.  Meander the island’s thermal spas, 365 rivers, dramatic waterfalls, well-preserved colonial architecture and the last remaining home of the indigenous Kalinago peoples: all of this and much more can be experienced while staying at Fort Young.

History of Dominica

As a hidden treasure, Dominica prides itself on its well-preserved cultural heritage, natural attractions and incomparable hospitality. With 365 rivers, never-ending hiking trails, the second-largest boiling lake in the world, three national parks, relics of pre- and post-Columbian antiquity, colorful tropical gardens, and active volcanic habitats, Dominica’s natural heritage is an untouched gem of the Caribbean, waiting for you to experience.

About

Dominica is most known for its deep waters and lush landscape, but what makes Dominica stand out among other locations is its deep rooted cultural history and preserved sites. Naming the island ‘Waitukubuli’—meaning “tall is her body”—to reflect the mountainous and elegant fertile land, Dominica is home to the largest native population in the region, with around 2,000 indigenous Kalinago people still living on the island, which keeps the cultural history and awareness alive. A representation of a pre-Columbian village, the Kalinago Barana Auté is one of the island’s most rich cultural attractions.

Welcome to Nature Island Dive | Welcome to DOMINICA!

l e t   t h e   a d v e n t u r e   b e g i n….

Nature Island Dive is located in Soufriere, Dominica on the shore of the Soufriere Scott’s Head Marine Reserve.  We offer scuba diving, dive certification courses, and snorkeling in the beautiful southwest of the Nature Island of the Caribbean, DOMINICA.

Our passion is the sea and we love to share it with you!  Our conservation efforts include Lionfish control, REEF surveys, reef monitoring, mooring installation and maintenance, and many more projects.  We believe everyone should be able to enjoy the incredible beauty of Dominica’s underwater world, so we work hard every day both to preserve it and to introduce people to it.

We are well-known for diving in very small groups and for our personalised customer service.  Once you hand us your gear, we take care of it for you for the rest of your stay: we set it up on the boat at the beginning of each dive day, and then we rinse, dry and store it for you until the next day.

Our team has been diving in the Marine Reserve since 1994 and we have a bucketful of expertise: fish Id, coral ID, conservation, marine protection, macro photography, critter photography, lionfish control and more.

REEF Conservation Partner

In the beautiful southwest Caribbean, Nature Island Dive is located on the shore of Scott’s Head Marine Reserve in Soufriere, Dominica. Nature Island Dive offers small-group scuba diving, snorkeling, paddle boarding, and kayaking experiences for those looking to explore the nature island, Dominica.

As a REEF Conservation Partner they support the Invasive Species Program by serving as a center for marine conservation actions, outreach, and education. They educate the public on the invasive lionfish population that entered Dominica in 2011 and actively remove them from various dives sites within the reserve. Furthermore, they teamed up with local fisheries to promote the sale of lionfish. You can taste lionfish at their Bottom Time Café or purchase lionfish jewelry made by a Nature Island Dive Instructor! (Desiree Bell, The Lionfish Mermaid.)

The Sperm Whales of Dominica

Dominica’s west coast hosts approximately five sperm whale families, each with five to nine cetaceans. Females and their calves comprise the majority of these groups. Occasionally you will encounter a male, 45 to 55 feet long, easily recognizable being thirty percent larger than the females. Frequently a family will socialize playing in the water, while other times they may remain stationary, totally vertical in the water. Sometimes the pod will swim slowly, allowing you to fin alongside with them, while other times their speed picks up as we follow them until they suddenly stop, apparently waiting for us. Each encounter offers a different opportunity, one more exhilarating and awe-inspiring than the next.

So that we can help protect our reefs, we encourage our guests to choose and use a sunscreen that is “coral safe”.
