Socorro Islands – Citizen Science Research Expedition: March 5-12, 2021

Description

Socorro Island – Citizen Science Research Expedition with Fins Attached

The Revillagigedo Archipelago is located about 400 kilometres southwest of the tip of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula and attracts large concentrations of pelagic species, making it a spectacular spot for diving encounters.  To divers, it is commonly known simply as Socorro.

The archipelago consists of four islands: San Benedicto, Socorro, Roca Partida and Clarion.  They are wild, remote and unpredictable.  They also offer divers some of the best big fish diving in the world!  The abundance of large marine species has earned the islands the title of the ‘Mexican Galapagos’.

The area is famous for up close and personal encounters with giant Pacific manta rays, observing up to seven species of shark, wild bottlenose dolphin, whale sharks  and humpback whales who come here to breed and calve annually (both seasonal).  Other marine life includes yellowfin tuna, wahoo and thick schools of jacks.

The underwater topography is made up of boulders and walls and the focus in this cool water destination is very much on large pelagic encounters.  Remember to pack your wide-angle lens.  Suitable for experienced divers and only accessible by liveaboard.

Our research vessel, the M/Y Sharkwater is a 134-foot research and expedition-ready vessel, originally built as a Japanese fishing boat, but has been repurposed for the good of our oceans. Small group, no more than 12 participants, experience with hands on participation.

Fins Attached Mission

To conduct research, promote conservation, and provide education for the protection of the marine ecosystem.

We believe in the preservation of our world’s precious resources and that through the protection of the oceans apex predators, marine ecosystem balance can be maintained for the benefit of all living things on earth.

The health of any ecosystem is controlled largely by its apex predators. So, while our work aims to impact the marine ecosystem as a whole, much of our research is focused on the apex predators of the marine environment, which are sharks.

Our organization is comprised of scientists, companies, organizations, and people concerned with the health of the world’s oceans. The scientists that represent Fins Attached range in backgrounds from divers to Ph.D marine biologists.

As a result, we direct our efforts in the following categories:

  • Shark Research
  • Shark Conservation
  • Public awareness and education
  • Advocacy – Affecting international policy to protect our oceans

Aboard the M/Y Sharkwater – this dive adventure is meant to conduct research, promote conservation, and provide education for the protection of the marine ecosystem.  The research includes coastal sharks, turtles and turtle nesting beaches, hammerhead shark nursery areas, and manta rays.  Small group, no more that 12 participants, experience with hands on participation.
